The two Deaf Instructors act as role models across the peripatetic Hearing Impaired team and both the Resource Bases at Christopher Pickering and Sirius Academy West. Both Instructors have a great deal of experigence working across all age ranges. The Deaf Instructors liaise with Teachers of the Deaf to teach and offer support both one to one and in small groups at a range of settings.
We teach both deaf children and their families British Sign Language (BSL). We are approved by Signature to teach the students BSL up to level two. The team supports the weekly Hearing Impaired Preschool group and provides parents with weekly BSL sessions. We provide weekly support to targeted students at both nurseries and special school. These usually focus on developing language and communication through BSL. We offer and run youth clubs to secondary aged students during the school holidays. This provides them with a chance to meet other hearing impaired students and feel less isolated. They complete activities such as cooking, football, table tennis and pool. They create and teach AQA Life Skills to help students get ready for life outside of education. Some of the topics include, interview skills, cooking and budgeting. The team create sign supported graphics for the deaf young people to use. These include signed stories, cue cards and flashcards to support in the classroom.
